SoFlo: Ceramics

Although I left Florida in June, they are still letting me be a part of this awesome exhibit highlighting current South Florida trends in ceramic art. SoFlo: Ceramics will be on view at the Armory Art Center from July 22 - Sept 3, 2011. On display will be my two vases, pictured here.

Offering a perspective of current trends in South Florida, this invitational exhibition highlights the thriving ceramics community and showcases the great ceramic talents with a range of sculptural and functional work. SoFlo is a group of artists and educators working at institutions from Miami to Jupiter, such as Miami International University, Barry University, Florida Atlantic University, Palm Beach State College and the Armory Art Center.

Looking Forward, Looking Around

I am entering the last month of living in Florida. While I have a considerable amount of down-sizing and packing to do, I hope to enjoy some of my favorite SoFlo sites: Banyan trees, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Armory Art Center (for a little more working and making).
Here are some images of works created there during this past year.

Looking forward, I am so excited to be moving to Gatlinburg, TN and beginning a residency at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts from June 2011 - until June 2012.

S&P Swimming Pool

My salt and pepper set was inspired by backyard swimming pools in my West Palm Beach neighborhood. The bather is the pepper shaker and the innertube pool-floatie is the salt cellar. Check out an awesome swimming pool ashtray from the 1960s here.

New Squirrel Plates

I guess I just can't leave that rascally squirrel alone! Here are two new plates featuring the squirrel. A new drawing about making choices and another hoop jumper.

Recent Firings

A few things from recent firings at the Armory Art Center. I am especially excited about the tumbler. I have been trying to achieve more depth with my surfaces, so I brushed a grolleg slip below the water line. The clear glaze pulled the black underglaze down the side of the tumbler for a nice, watery effect. This tumbler is JUICY -- just like her thighs!

Heading South

I recently accepted an 8-month artist in residence position at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, FL. I will be there from September 1, 2010 - April 30, 2011.

Meanwhile, I will continue to work in my studio at the University of Florida until July 1.

Concepts behind "Catch"

Yesterday I successfully defended my project-in-lieu-of-thesis, Catch, as part of the requirements for getting an MFA at the University of Florida. Because I had already deinstalled the show, I created a Keynote presentation to visually supplement the oral defense. I received positive feedback. If you are interested in seeing more images of the show and an overview of the concepts behind the work, check out the presentation.

a la cARTe at NCECA Philly

Drawing together the work of thirty-two ceramic artists and three Philadelphia restaurants, a la cARTe explores the intersection of economic and aesthetic practices and discourse.

During the Philadelphia NCECA 2010, my plates were on display at Craperie Beau Monde. I visited each of the three participating a la cARTe restaurants and snapped some photos of pots in action.

NCECA 2009

I am fortunate to be participating in two events during the National Council for Education of the Ceramic Arts' conference in Phoenix, Arizona this year. The first is titled, "Peer Influence". Arizona State University Graduate students each invited one of their peers to participate in a show. Jana Evans, currently a 2nd year MFA candidate at ASU, invited me. Thanks Jana!

The second event is titled, "al a cARTe". Two Phoenix restaurants have teamed up with eleven ceramic artists to feature handmade tableware. See the facebook event here:

This is from a series I was working on during the spring semester 2008. The form is slipcast. I was exploring graphic pattern and bold colors to celebrate playful curiosity. I think of this series as bowls with windshields and squirrel tails.
